Ask a friend about her favourite piece

A simple conversation starter with more room for stories than shopping advice.

The story

Instead of asking where someone bought an outfit, try asking which part they have owned the longest. The answer might begin with a shop, but it can quickly lead somewhere more interesting.

You could ask how the piece came into their life, what they pair it with, or whether their feelings about it have changed. Leave space for a brief answer as well as a long one; not every item needs a moving backstory.

For a small gathering, invite everyone to bring a photograph or describe a favourite piece. Nobody needs to wear it or explain its price. A remembered hand-me-down can belong in the conversation just as much as a recent purchase.

If you want to share someone’s story or photo afterwards, ask first and agree on the credit. The point is connection, and the person should keep control of what becomes public.
