VintageBuilding Personal Style Through Secondhand Finds
By John Bloste
Give an older find room to stand out among the things you already wear.

Choose one piece with a detail you love: an unusual collar, a particular print, a button or a shape you do not see in the rest of your wardrobe. It does not need a complete period outfit around it.
Begin with a familiar base. A vintage blouse can sit with your usual jeans; a distinctive jacket can change a plain T-shirt and trousers. Keeping part of the outfit ordinary makes it easier to understand the effect of the new piece.
Notice the fit as you move. Older labels and sizing conventions may not map neatly to what you buy now, so use measurements and the garment itself rather than the number alone. If an alteration is essential, check what is possible before committing.
Then choose whether to echo or contrast with one detail. A colour repeated in a scarf can connect the outfit; a simple shoe can keep an elaborate print in focus.
Vintage is a description of an item’s history, not a complete outfit instruction. You get to decide what happens next.
